What materials are used to manufacture PCBs?
Isola
These are designed to operate in high-speed digital products that require higher signal integrity and are more prone to experiencing temperature ranges. There are various resin systems that are used to make these products.
PTFE
This material is commonly used in radar applications, such as those for high-speed communications, and it can withstand the environment better than other resin materials.

Copper
Copper is the conductive material in the PCBs.
FR4
The FR4 material is a type of flame retardant laminate that has an underlying layer of woven glass fabric and a resin binder. It has been around for over 50 years, and it has evolved with the continuous operating temperature of 180 degrees Celsius. However, it doesn’t have the best electrical characteristics and thermal expansion coefficient, which are some of the factors that make it less commonly used in the production of PCBs.
Metal
Aluminum, copper, iron, and other traditional materials such as steel are still used in PCBs. Through the use of surface mount technology, these components can be integrated seamlessly into a system. This allows for a longer product life.

Pcb layers
Silkscreen layer
The goal of the silkscreen layer is to make it easier for people to understand the various functions of LEDs and pins. It involves adding symbols and letters to the board so that it’s easier for users to identify them.
Soldermask layer
The solder mask layer is placed over the copper, which provides the most prominent green color on PCBs. This layer ensures that the copper doesn’t come into contact with other elements.
Copper layer
Printed Circuit Board (PCB) materials are made from a copper foil that’s laminated to the board using heat. The copper layer’s thickness determines the amount of power that the board can handle. PCBs that need to withstand higher levels of power will have thicker copper layers.
Substrate layer
This type of board is usually made from fiberglass, which gives it its rigidity. However, some types of substrates are also made with epoxies, which do not provide the same durability.

Popular PCB board assembling components
Sensors
These devices are used to measure the changes in environmental conditions. They then generate an electrical signal that is sent to other components of the circuit board. The signal is then converted into electrical energy.
Diodes
Diodes are devices that prevent an electric current from flowing in both directions. They do this by preventing the current from damaging the device and the board. The most common type of diodes is the LED.
Transformers
It is used for changing energy in voltage.
Inductors
Similar to capacitors, these are devices that store energy. However, they can also be used to block signals coming from a device inside a printed circuit board.
Transistors
A transistor is an electronic device that controls or switches the signals coming from a device. There are various types of transistor, and the most common is the bipolar one.
Capacitors
Capacitors are designed to collect and release electrical charges from a board. They do so by separating the conductive layers of the board. When the need for additional power arises, these charges are released.
Resistors
A resistor is a device that uses an electrical current to create a voltage and dissipate it as heat. They can be made from various materials.
